Cooking Classes

Culture Kitchen is the perfect introduction to food for the over twos and is a class that has been known to transform the pickiest pallets into fabulous foodies.

Your children will arrive to the sound of the ‘Wash Your hands’ song: a routine that actively encourages hygiene during food preparation. The children are then seated on booster seats: this allows them to sit at the same height as their parents/carers seated opposite and makes it easier for them to reach the required equipment.

Every child will receive their own equipment, sharing is not necessary: they are each given their own large workspace along with chopping board and everything else they will need to prepare and create their dish. They are also given a safety knife: these ingeniously allow them to cut fruit, vegetables, meat and fish but not cut their fingers.

Children are then given the week’s recipe card and are shown the country from which the delicacy originates. To date, we have cooked dishes from more than sixty different countries and these have included sushi from Japan, pukacaps from Bolivia and Australian damper.

Once the children have prepared their dish ready for cooking, it’s marked with their name to ensure that there are no mix-ups--this is something that is taken very seriously, as some of our pupils have food allergies—and taken to the kitchen where it is cooked by our in-house chef, Cheryl.

With the food preparation done, the children wash their hands again and meet on the floor in a circle. Once there they help locate the day’s country on a huge map and are shown indigenous props and listen to the local music. This break away from the workspace allows the staff to clean up ready for the next activity.

The children are then relocated to another workspace where they will participate in an art project that is linked to the day’s country: the children made ponchos for our class on Peru; didgeridoos for Australia; and tiny weaved rugs for Iran. The art and craft project lasts for approximately 20 minutes. We then have a five minute dance to the ‘Coffee Song’ and then seated again to the ‘Super Supper March’.

Each week we make fresh juice and the children are invited to guess what fruit it is made out of from looking at its colour. The children are then served the food that they made and eat it. As long as the food does not contain poultry, fish or rice, the children are allowed to take their food home in a takeaway tub to share with their family. Each child also takes home their recipe card so that they can recreate their tasty meal for the whole family, again and again.

The whole experience lasts about an hour and 10 minutes. We take a maximum of 12 children per session and have a minimum of 3 members of staff at all times: on busy sessions we have 4. Parents/carers must stay with the children and sadly this class is not suitable for younger children but grandparents are welcome!

Testimonials

July 2008 - Lexi & Vanessa

Culture kitchen has been a wonderful experience for my daughter, lexi. We started the class when she was two and a half and I have watched her master chopping, basting, cracking, kneeding and sifting. Forgetting the incredible improvement in her hand eye coordination, culture kitchen has helped her try foods from all over the world. All the while teaching her about so many different cultures I can't keep track!

The class also combines an art project related to the country at hand and Mia is amazingly creative and always makes up something really fun and doable for the kids.

Lexi is four and a half now and her interest in the culture kitchen has not waned at all. We recently decided that her sister Vanessa, age two was ready to join in on the fun and they love going to the class together!!
